On December 20, 1981, Dreamgirls debuted at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway!

Just in time for the holiday season, theatergoers were treated to a rousing musical about stardom, betrayal and forgiveness.

The musical's success made newcomer, Jennifer Holliday, a house-hold name and catapulted her - and her voice - to stardom!

Contributing to the musical's collaborative success was my very own Dad who worked on the production as a stagehand.

The broadway musical spun off many incarnations, including several stage productions throughout the world and even a movie version in 2006 starring Beyonce.

In 1982, Dreamgirls racked up several Tony nominations and awards!

Take a peek at the clip below and watch Jennifer Holliday's unforgettable performance on the Tony Awards, followed by acceptance speeches from well-deserved cast members.

To this day, Dreamgirls is still captivating audiences. The most recent production was held at Baltimore's Center Stage from November 16 through December 19

Here's a still shot from the film version of Dreamgirls in 2006, with Jennifer Hudson in the role that Holliday made famous.
